...that's what she said
...that's what she said is a dance performance project that seeks to uplift women, girls, and femmes of all ages. For its third and final season, the project will be expanding its already intergenerational cohort even further by inviting young students to perform as guests in the production. The WDA Winter Intensive will provide students ages 12+ the opportunity to train with the professional choreographers and dancers of the 2020 cohort. Students will take contemporary master classes with a new instructor each day for the purpose of discovering the wide spectrum of contemporary and modern dance forms while also uncovering their own movement voice within those forms.
CLOSING THE GENDER GAP IN CHOREOGRAPHY
"There needs to be more encouragement and support for women — at an impressionable age — to explore that choreographic side of their brains."
- Justin Peck, Choreographer for NYC Ballet | New York Times
Even in the progressively-minded world of modern and contemporary dance, men vastly outpace women in roles of leadership, particularly in the realm of choreography. As Betsy Miller, Assistant Professor of Dance at Salem State University, stated, "People say the dance field is dominated by women. It isn’t. It is populated by women." ...that's what she said combats this imbalance at a local level by lifting up women and femmes in the Greater Boston dance community, incubating projects in order to encourage continued growth for female leaders and innovators in the performing arts. With this mission in mind, the WDA Winter Intensive will empower students to hone their own voice and create, over the course of four days, a short student-choreographed contemporary piece, with guidance from two ...that's what she said mentors. Students will have the opportunity to perform their work at ...that's what she said on March 12 at the Boston Center for the Arts in Boston's historic South End.
