Jennifer Lin is a classically trained dancer, independent choreographer, teaching artist and scholar with a career spanning four decades. Lin holds degrees from Boston Conservatory and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. She is creator of a digital ethnography titled, Performing Korean-ness: a brief interview of Mary Jo Freshley also-known-as Pai Myung-sa.  A few of Lin’s career highlights includes performing at the National Assembly in South Korea, collaborating on a mask dance exhibition and teaching project for schools on the big island of Hawaii, and teaching in Beijing, China. Lin has presented dance at the Honolulu Asia Pacific Dance Festival (2011), and in the Boston area for Dance for World Community (2012), Dance Complex (2005-16), Boston Conservatory World Fest (2013-2016), and most recently Mount Auburn’s A Glimpse Beyond (2016 & 17), Pao Arts Center (2017), Experience Chinatown After Dark (2018), and Clark University (2019). In addition to creating new work, Lin teaches Pilates and performs with The Elder’s Ensemble of Prometheus Dance.

ABOUT THE WORK

In a second engagement with ...that's what she said Lady BOS Productions, choreographer Jennifer Lin continues to present dances centered in identity politics, story telling, and immigration. In 2019 Lin presented a suite of dances based on the immigrant roots of her Asian American family, and stories from the performers. In the up coming March 2020 production, Lin presents Coddiwomple, a dance that intertwines the meaning of the title word (to travel purposefully toward an as-yet-unknown or vague destination) with the journeys of immigrants and migrants.

The multi-generational cast that comprises Coddiwomple ranges from 22 to 90. Seven of the dancers: Joanie Block, Karen Klein, Julie Leavitt, Jennifer Lin, Eliza Mallouk, Sue Penney, and Vicky Steinitz were former members of The Elders Ensemble of Prometheus Dance, which discontinued in June 2019. Their desire to continue dancing together prompted a reunion within the piece. Other performers in Coddiwomple include Olivia Blaisdell, IJ Chan, Flora Kim, and Kristin Wagner. In addition to the services provided by Lady BOS Productions through ...that's what she said, the development of Coddiwomple was additionally made possible through The Dance Complex's CATALYSTS Residency program.

While the musical accompaniment for Coddiwomple was not commissioned for this dance, the choreographer and composer have a serendipitous link. Lin and Sebastian Plano, both alumni of The Boston Conservatory met and worked together at its Audiovisual Department. Several years after graduating, Plano sent his then- newly released CD to the Audiovisual office, where Lin discovered it, was drawn to it and ultimately decided to choreograph this piece to it.
